Ribbon embroidery begins with four things: Fabric to stitch on, a needle with a wide eye, ribbon, and your own sense of adventure.

Whether you use a pattern or go with your own ideas, everyone creates something unique. You and a friend can start out on the same project and end up with two completely different-looking pieces, even if you use the same stitches and supplies.

Creating individual results every time is one of the great advantages of ribbon embroidery. Another is that you don't make mistakes -- you only make variations. Pulling too tightly or having lopsided stitches only improves your work and makes it more realistic. It also shows your individuality as an embroiderer.

Because ribbon is wider than floss, it works up quickly, spreading over a larger area in a short amount of time (consider how many cross-stitches it would take to cover that same area). Ribbon, especially silk ribbon, comes in many different widths and colours, including variegated, as well as blends. A silk organza ribbon adds sparkle to your work, and an extra dimension of colour as well.

Silk ribbon embroidery is often used for stitching gorgeous birds, bugs, and blooms. But you can also tack down the sides of the ribbon to the fabric to represent a bride's gown, a woven basket, or a cat's tail.

From Martha Stewart – Bacon, Egg and Toast Cups.

Try cooked, crumbled sausage in place of bacon or make a vegetarian version with sauteed spinach. Dress things up with a sprinkle of Parmesan cheese.

Ingredients

3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
8 slices white or whole-wheat sandwich bread
6 slices bacon
6 large eggs
Coarse salt and ground pepper
Directions

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Lightly butter 6 standard muffin cups. With a rolling pin, flatten bread slices slightly and, with a 4 1/4-inch cookie cutter, cut into 8 rounds. Cut each round in half, then press 2 halves into each muffin cup, overlapping slightly and making sure bread comes up to edge of cup. Use extra bread to patch any gaps. Brush bread with remaining butter.

In a large skillet, cook bacon over medium, until almost crisp, 4 minutes, flipping once. (It will continue to cook in the oven.) Lay 1 bacon slice in each bread cup and crack an egg over each. Season with salt and pepper. Bake until egg whites are just set, 20 to 25 minutes. Run a small knife around cups to loosen toasts. Serve immediately.

Cook’s Note

Standard muffin pans come in 6- or 12-cup size; if baking 6 items in a 12-cup pan, leave empty space in between. Nonstick pans are nice but not essential. Beware of very thin pans, which often lead to burning. Place pans on a baking sheet to make them easier to get in and out of the oven.

Tomato Jam

1 1/2 pounds good ripe tomatoes (Roma are best), cut in pieces.

1 cup sugar
2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
1 cinnamon stick

Combine all ingredients in a heavy medium saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring often. Reduce heat and simmer, stirring occasionally, until mixture has consistency of thick jam, remove about 1 hour 15 minutes. Remove cinnamon stick and pour the jam in sterilized bottles.

Lemon Marmalade

1 kg lemons
2 kg granulated sugar
1 vanilla pod, split, seeds scraped out and reserved

Top and tail the lemons. Juice them, and then slice the rinds as thinly or thickly as you like. I think thinly is better, but will allow you the freedom to choose. Put lemon mixture into a large pan, and cook gently for a few hours until the lemon rind is soft. The liquid will have reduced by about a third.

Add the sugar. Boil, and stir until the sugar has dissolved. Then boil rapidly until the setting point (* see note) has been reached. This took about 40 minutes for me, though start checking at 20.

Turn off the heat. Stir through the vanilla seeds, and pour into hot, sterilised jars (* see note). Seal immediately. Use within 2 years

NB: To check for setting point: when you start boiling the jam, put a saucer in the freezer to chill. After boiling for the required time, drop small dribbles of the jam onto the saucer and wait a moment. If, when you poke the puddle of jam with your finger, the surface forms a wrinkle, the setting point has been reached. To sterilise jars, wash them in warm, soapy water, rinse, and dry on a baking sheet in a low oven.

I HAD THE PRIVILEGE OF GOING TO THE SPRING CRAFT AND TEDDY BEAR FAIR IN CATERHAM, SURREY WHICH WAS HELD ON SATURDAY THE 9TH OF APRIL. I FLEW IN ESPECIALLY TO MEET ALL THE GREAT TEDDY ARTISTS. I WAS EXPECTING TO SEE MORE ARTISTS BUT THE ONES THAT I MET WERE PROFESSIONALS IN THEIR WORKMANSHIP. EMELIA POLLARD OF HIGGYS BEARS GAVE ME SOME TRICKS OF THE TRADE.

I MET SASHA KLESHEVA AND ANN GARDNER AND THEIR TEDDIES. I ENJOYED SEEING ALL THE DIFFERENT CHARACTERS, SHAPES AND SIZES OF TEDDIES.

I ALSO MET DIANA HUBER-PERKINS OF H & G CREATIONS DISPLAYING HER BEAUTIFUL GREETING CARDS CREATED FROM HER ORIGINAL WATERCOLOUR PAINTINGS. I HAD THE HONOUR OF MEETING JACKY FOWLER OF LAND OF PURPLE RAINDROPS. JACKY YOUR CARDS ARE INSPRING. TO ALL THE LADIES CONGRATULATIONS FOR THE BEAUTIFUL CRAFTS.
